What are MicroLessons?

Micro-learning lessons are bite-sized activities that teach an isolated skill. Each standard is broken down into smaller learning targets that become the basis of a micro-learning lesson. Before the lesson begins, students rate themselves on each criteria for success in meeting the learning target. This becomes both a chance for self-reflection and a useful piece of information for teachers. Students receive direct instruction by watching an engaging video. Then they put that learning into practice. A series of Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs) provide ample opportunity to try out new concepts and get instant feedback as students work toward understanding. Teachers then get clear data on how students performed, which can inform class instruction.

👏The Why

Activities designed with accessibility in mind.

Micro-learnings are built from the ground up with accessibility as part of the design. There will be reduced cognitive overload for students, and additional accommodations (such as screen-readers) for all classrooms.

Lessons are concise and designed to be finished in a single sitting.

Bite-sized activities help students maintain their focus on the lesson, and make for more efficient use of the classroom’s time.

An introduction to Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs).

More standardized tests are starting to move online, in large part so that students can see new question types that are only possible in a digital setting. Our Micro-learning provide classrooms with a safe setting to explore TEIs and understand how to answer them before they are encountered on a standardized test.

Modern, web-based save system to ensure no work is lost.

Students will no longer need to worry about losing progress when they log out in the middle of an activity! Our new system saves their progress as they answer each question, so that students can pick up right where they left off.

Increases the likelihood learners will remain attentive, engaged, and motivated throughout the learning

Consistent structure across Reading, Lectura, and Math products.

A consistent lesson structure means that our users will be able to immediately know how to use the interface, see their progress, and understand their results even if they are using an entirely different Istation product.

Opportunities for student cognitive engagement through questions and pauses Reduces cognitive load because students work on small pieces of an overall standard at a time.

fire Differentiators

  • Students get the opportunity for additional instruction throughout their practice through Targeted Feedback.
  • Promotes learner agency by self-assessing where they are before the learning, completing a survey at the end, and feedback in real-time.
  • Enables spaced learning experiences to promote retention and transfer.
  • Allows working memory and executive attention to focus exclusively on processing the targeted learning without having to filter additional or irrelevant information.
